Fantastic Season For Thunder Finishes In Tight Final Defeat

A fantastic season for Woking Thunder came to a close on Sunday, with a narrow defeat to league champions Yateley Silverbacks 2.

With a preseason target of just making the playoffs, the team absolutely smashed that goal, securing promotion and as mentioned making the final. After a bit of an up and down first half of the season, Thunder closed the regular season out on an 8 game winning streak (with an average margin of victory of 30 points) to secure second place, finishing with a 12-4 record – trebling last year’s total amount of wins.

The Thunder played a young but talented Basingstoke Blizzards 2 team in the first round of the playoffs, drawing the first leg away and then having a solid 20 point win in the second leg to set-up a final against league winners, Yateley Silverbacks 2.

It was a hotly contested game, however thanks to a third quarter run by Yateley they entered the final frame up by 14. With a switch to an intense man to man, and strong support from the Thunder fans, Woking were able to mount a huge comeback and close the gap to 3 points with seconds to go – unfortunately a last second 3 just rimmed out, meaning the Playoff Shield was Yateley’s.

As mentioned this was a fantastic season for the team, not only from a results perspective but in the growth shown throughout the whole team. Special thanks to all of the coaches who dedicate their time to the team, and of course the fantastic support we’ve had all season.

We can’t wait to see what Division 2 and 18-19 has in store for the Thunder!
