Aztec too good
Home to Aztec Storm, Wednesday 23rd March, Lost 62-34
Another small team of 6, mostly injury and illness free, battled hard against one of the league's top teams, Aztec Storm. Having played Aztecs twice before, the Blackhawk ladies knew the threat that was in front of them and began the game with solid defensive performance, limiting Aztec's scoring capabilities. Down the other end, Woking took some good opportunities and it was Aztecs who started on the back foot, with Woking up 8-6 mid-way through the first quarter. Aztecs rallied back however, making the most of their height advantage on defence to end the quarter 15-8.
Despite being few in number, Woking kept the pressure on Aztecs on offence, pushing the ball up the court on every rebound or steal. And whilst Woking did secure many a defensive rebound, Aztec out-shot the Woking ladies, knocking down several long range jumpers to end the half 32 - 20.
In the second half, the Aztec ladies played some strategic defence, switching regularly between zone and man-to-man play, forcing a few 24-second shot clock violations and causing Woking to rush some shots. Smart defensive play by the Blackhawk ladies kept the quarter close however, with Woking only loosing by 4 points.
By the fourth quarter, it was fitness that cost the Woking ladies, both physically and psychologically as some poor decision making and precision with passes lead to too many easy fast breaks for Aztecs. The final score unfortunately does not reflect Woking's performance and fight throughout the game against a clearly superior team.
