Flyers Quell the Rebels

Woking Blackhawk Flyers 83 – Plymouth Rebels 64

A dominating performance saw the Flyers take victory in the first game of the New Year. With pivotal members missing due to injury, illness and work commitments, the available squad had to play to their strengths, which they did much to the pleasure of Coach Knode.

Coach Knode was also able to call on the services of Jeremy Nanton-Hamel from the under 18s squad.

Rhys Johnson won the tip, however a quick turn over and the Rebels claimed the first basket and their biggest lead of the game.  The first quarter continued with the sides exchanging baskets and the lead, the Flyers were comfortable and controlled their offensive plays .  AT the first break the Flyers had a marginal 3 point lead. Their advantage extended in the second quarter with the lead widening to 11 two minutes before the half. For the only time in the game the Flyers lost their direction and allowed the Rebels to come back which reduced the lead to 1 point at the half (42:41) . The last five seconds being particularly hard with the Rebels sinking a three pointer and turning over the  Flyer inbound ball resulting in a second basket.

After that wakeup call the Flyers returned to the court for the second half, dominating the period winning it by 22 points to 11 giving them a 11 point lead. The final period continued in the same vain with the Rebels trying to respond but being effectively repelled by the Flyers. The Flyers coming out with a 19point 83-64 victory.

Coach Knodes pleasure in the squads performance was tempered by his ballooning ankle which he strained in the last quarter and will likely keep him out of the next game.  Damian , Tom Peters and Dan Marshall all claimed double digit scores of 29,22 & 16 respectively with Dan Marshall pulling down 12 rebounds to give him a double :double.  Richard Green provided exceptional support with 8 points and brilliant support to the rest of the squad throughout the game.
