Woking Blackhawks vs Aztec Jaguars

Woking came into the last game of their season knowing that they could not secure a playoff position, having been pipped to the post by the Craftsmen. Despite this, the Blackhawks got off to a decent start, and went into an early 15 – 7 lead. However, a streak of sloppy turnovers led to a 11 – 0 run for the Aztecs. Blackhawks looked like a team who had nothing to play for, and after one quarter they trailed 20 -17.

In the second quarter they managed to cut out the sloppy turn overs, but they still looked flat and low on energy. Combined with some pretty terrible shooting, they may have felt lucky to finish the half leading 33 -32. David Nuttall and Ben Woods finished the half with eight first half points apiece, but in general buckets were proving hard to come by.

The pattern continued in the third quarter, with both teams only scoring 11 points. Only one of the Blackhawks was able to score more than one basket, with Devon James getting 5 points. With the game tied and 3 minutes to go, Blackhawks seemed to wake up, and played some really good defence on vital plays. James Grinham came up with a big time steal which led to a Nuttall to Sputnik fast break, and James Grinham also chose the end of the game to start shooting the ball, to great effect. He came up with 7 of his 10 points in the last 5 minutes of the game.

Good season everyone! It’s been an absolute pleasure. We’ve had our ups and downs but it’s always been fun playing with you all. Here’s to an even better season next year! (Those of us who are staying)

Final score: Blackhawks 68 – 64 Aztecs

David Nuttall ( c ): 12 points – terrible shooting night, but got to the rack well and clocked up a number of assists

Devon James: 12 points – Didn’t get much luck with foul calls, and never quite reached the free scoring heights he is capable of, but still managed to chip in with a handy number of baskets. This may have been his last game and his contribution will be very much missed

Ben Woods: 10 points – After 12 years with the club this was his last game! He trailed well, pulled down rebounds and scored a few of his patented midrange jumpers. You know that’s money! We wish him well in Hong Kong.

James Grinham: 10 points – Another key member of the squad playing his last game. He’s off to university which, if you ask me, is incredibly selfish of him! Education vs Local league basketball. There should only be one winner. Maybe he’ll learn how to make better choices at University.

Nick Sammut: 8 points – His usual energetic self. Had a decent game….and he is NOT leaving next year!!

David Fellows: 4 points – Played really well in limited minutes. Good defence, boxing out and running the lanes.

James Wildsmith: 4 points – not his best game but ran the floor well on occasion and brought some much needed energy.

Rick Lansdell: 4 points – Played some great defence, getting one big block, and rebounded well! Did a great job especially considering he has to coach as well!

Samir – Another one who’s off to university! What is going on here? Anyway, he knocked down a nice jumper and looked good going to the basket. All the best at Uni Samir!

Special mention to Samuel Piercey: If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. But, if you get four air balls in a row, it is probably time to take it to the rack!
